Captivating Colors
APRIL/MAY 2008

COLOR - as a backdrop and a major player - is crucial to any design scheme. That makes choosing color combinations both a challenge and an opportunity. From a sophisticated pairing of chocolate brown and light blue to a contemporary marriage of stone gray and dark salmon to the high-voltage union of cobalt with yellow and red, the choices for combining colors are virtually infinite. Check out these creative combos to find your own inspiration.

Go for the Bold
The modern approach to color and furnishings makes Julie and Michael Featherston's otherwise typical center-hall colonial in Murray Hill unexpectedly unique, says deisgner Jana Manning of Manning Design Group. The high-contrast color sheme began with the Featherston's love of cobalt blue, joined by other high energy tones - yellow and orangey-red - that appeal to their sense of adventure. Their appreciation for Scandinavian and Asian design also influenced the room's orderly layout, clean lines, and minimal ornamentation, says Manning, an allied member of the American Society of Interior Designers. Storage cabinets are lighted from within, softly highlighting the rice-paper-patterned Lucite panels. Predominantly red fabric panels contrast with the blue and yellow walls; fun and unexpected blocks of color appear in the concrete coffee table.
